1. Introduction
Swine pox is an acute often mild, infectious disease in pigs, caused by Suipoxvirus with typical symptoms including red round vesicles on the surface of the skin of abdomens, axilla, faces and heads of piglets.
2. Etiology
The disease is caused by Suipoxvirus that can be transmitted by direct contact from pig to pig by fleas, biting louse (Haematopinus suis). The disease also may be transmitted, possibly, by other insects (flies, mosquitoes). The virus invades skin through scratches, replicating rapidly and attacking skin after viremia.

3. Symptoms
- The incubation period is 4-5 days, no more than 14 days lasting 1-3 weeks. The disease mainly occurs in piglets. Adult pigs are rarely infected
- Clinical manifestation include mild fever, decreased appetite; on the skin surface, in the ears, inside the legs and abdomen appear many red vesicles with size of 1 cm then gradually a dimple is formed in the centre of a vesicle, later the vesicles blister, burst oozing and quickly produce brown or black crusts along with cornetist.
Pigs rarely die from swinepox merely, but secondary infections such as streptococcus, staphylococcus infection result in dermatitis, pneumonia.
4. Lesions
- Pox vesicles appear in red colour then become purulent, ulcerative, scaled then form scars
- Enlargement and degeneration of epithelial cells
- Congested and edematous Lymph nodes in the groin
- Primitive inflammation of epithelial cells,
- Degeneration and scar are forming in the epithelial cells.

5. Prevention
Prevention includes
- Hygienic measures: Isolation of infected pigs, disinfection of pigsties, killing lice, flies and intermediate animals that transmit the disease.
- Vaccination
Treatment
Swinepox virus causes the disease so there no specific treatment regimens.
One of the following regimens may be used:
- Regimen 1: CEFA LA 20% is I.M or S.C administered at dose of 1ml/25-30 kg B.W in conjunction with HERBAL MARPHASOL in water or feed at dose of 1g/1 litre of drinking water.
- Regimen 2: CEFQUINOM 150 is I.M or S.C administered at dose of 1ml/12-16kg B.W in conjunction with PARA 20% at dose of 1g/10-14 kg B.W .
- Regimen3: CEFANEW-LA is I.M or S.C administered at dose of 1ml/20-25 kg B.W in conjunction with ELECTROLYTE – GLUCO-K-C in water or feed at dose of 2g/litre of drinking water.
- Regimen4: MARFLO 45% is I.M or S.C administered at dose of 1ml/27-35 kg B.W in conjunction with HERBAL MARPHASOL in water or feed at dose of 1-2g/litre of drinking water.
