The disease is caused by Escherichia Coli and is offen a secondary infection to mycoplasmosis and coccidiosis. Stress is a factor facilitating the disease in chickens of all ages. Chickens at 4-5 weeks of age with respiratory disease are often co- infected with E.coli. E. coli causes umbilical inflammation and septicemia in chicks at 1 – 10 days of age with high motarlity
1.Etiology :
The disease is caused by Escherichia Coli and is often a secondary infection to mycoplasmosis and coccidiosis. Stress is a factor facilitating the disease in chickens of all ages. Chickens at 4-5 weeks of age with respiratory disease are often co- infected with E.coli. E. coli causes umbilical inflammation and septicemia in chicks at 1 – 10 days of age with high mortality
The mortality rates of embryos and chicks are high because of contaminated eggshells.
- Affected Chickens drink plenty of water, having greenish-white diarrhea with bubbles.
Affected Chickens are emaciated and feathered.
- Acute septicemia, sudden death ( Death usually occurs in the first 5 days).
- Synovitis, arthritis and myelitis
- Chicks from 1-5 weeks of age:
- Fever, drinking plenty of water, dyspnea, anorexia, swollen faces, and conjunctivitis,
- Some with arthritis
- Laying Hens: decreased laying rate, anorexia, emaciation, some express signs of arthritis
2. Lesions
Vary with a type of pathogenic E.coli, tissues, and stage of the disease. The lesions include inflammation of the air sacs, purulent pericarditis, inflammation of tissues around the liver, eyes, synovial membrane, oviduct in laying hens, in broilers, hemorrhagic enteritis, intestinal granuloma, umbilical inflammation in chicks.
3. Prevention: The prevention includes:
Always keeping the animal houses clean, cool and ventilated, spraying disinfectants regularly to kill pathogenic agents, enhancement of resistance of poultry to diseases by adding some products such as ELECTROLYTE GLUCO-K-C, BOVITMAR, 39 VITA AMIN, PARAMAR 20%. Periodic administration of antibiotics in feed 2-3 times per month, every 2-3 days at interval of 7-10 days. Choosing one of the following antibiotics: MARPHAMOX 50%, MAR-DOXY at recommeded preventive dose per directions on labels of the manufacturers.

Umbilical inflammation, undigested yolk and edema of the abdominal cavity caused by E.coli.
4. Treatment
One of the following regimens can be used for the treatment of the disease:
- Regimen 1: COLI 102 ORAL 1ml / 2 liters of drinking water equivalent to 1 ml / 9-12kg B.W. in conjunction with ELECTROLYTE GLUCO-K-C 1 gr / 7-10kg B.W / day equivalent to 1-2 gr/ liter of drinking water is administered.
- Regimen 2: FLOCOLIHEN at a dose of 1ml / 3 liters of drinking water equivalent to 1 ml / 12-15 kg B.W in combination with 39-VITA-AMINE 1gr / 2-3 liter of drinking water is administered.
- Regimen 3: A TO Z MAR 1g / 3-4 liter of drinking water equivalent to 1g / 15-20kg kg B.W in conjunction with ELECTROLYTE.C is consecutively administered for 3-5 days.
- Regimen 4: AMOX-COLIS 1g / kg B.W along with PARAMAR 20% 1g/6-10kg B.W/ days is consecutively administered for 3-5 days.
- Regimen 5: MARCOC E.COLI 1g / 2 liters of water equivalent to 1g / kg B.W in combination with 39 VITA-AMIN 1g / 2-3 liter of drinking water is consecutively administered for 3-5 days.
